Nikkō Tōshō-gū Spring Grand Festival
日光東照宮春季例大祭
The Nikkō Tōshō-gū Spring Grand Festival is a large event that recreates the procession of Tokugawa Ieyasu's spirit being reinterred from Sunpu to Nikkō. This festival is held annually for two days starting on May 17th, with the highlight being the "Hyakumono-soroe Sen-nin Musha Gyōretsu" on May 18th. The spectacle of approximately 1200 people parading along the path centered on a portable shrine captivates visitors. Nikkō Tōshō-gū is located in Nikkō City, Tochigi Prefecture, and can be accessed via the JR Nikkō Line or Tobu Nikkō Line. In addition, the area around Tōshō-gū offers many attractions, where visitors can enjoy historical buildings and beautiful nature. During the festival period, limited exhibitions of traditional crafts and special ceremonies are held, so it is worth visiting. It is recommended to secure a spot early to watch the shrine procession and enjoy the entire parade.
