Haruhisai Festival (Otaraiya)
春渡祭(おたりや)
The Haruwatari Festival (Otaruya) is a mystical festival in Utsunomiya City that marks the end of the New Year, centered around a night ritual held at the Futara Shrine. This event is filled with highlights, including the dedication of Dengaku dance, which is designated as a cultural asset, and the procession of mikoshi. It is believed that bathing in the festival's smoke can bring family harmony, good health, and fire prevention, attracting many worshippers.
The shrine is easily accessible, with city buses taking only a few minutes from JR Utsunomiya Station, and a short walk from Tobu Utsunomiya Station. If you visit by car, you can easily reach the area from nearby interchanges.
The limited amulets and goshuin offered during the festival are also noteworthy. This ever-charming festival is perfect for visitors seeking a special one-night experience.
After witnessing the must-see Dengaku dance and enjoying traditional food, pray for New Year's luck while watching the mikoshi procession. Don’t miss the chance to visit with family or friends and create wonderful memories.
