The Parallel Careers of Foujita and Yasuo Kuniyoshi: A Centenial Reunion
特別展「藤田嗣治×国吉康雄:二人のパラレル・キャリア—百年目の再会」
In the tumultuous first half of the 20th century, we are hosting an exhibition of two painters who experienced success and setbacks abroad, Tsuguharu Foujita (1886-1968) and Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1889-1953).
Tsuguharu Foujita, after graduating from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, went to France alone at the age of 26 and established his fame in France as a darling of the École de Paris with his unique painting style, praised as the "marvelous milky white ground," during the 1920s.
Yasuo Kuniyoshi moved to America at the age of 16, was recognized for his artistic talent, and established himself as a representative painter of American figurative painting. The two painters, active in Paris and New York, had connections in Paris in 1925 and 1928, and in New York in 1930, but their relationship was broken by the Pacific War.
Foujita spent 10 months of 1949 in New York, but his reunion with Kuniyoshi there could not be realized. How did these two, who had two homelands, create their works with their respective awareness and perspectives? We will introduce these two painters, who have been individually discussed until now, by contrasting their works through nine chapters.
