Tokugawa Art Museum 90th Anniversary Special Exhibition "National Treasure Hatsune's furnishings"

徳川美術館 開館90周年記念特別展 国宝 初音の調度

During the Edo period, Japan was governed by the Tokugawa shogunate family, known as the Gosanke, an indispensable part when discussing Japanese history and culture. The Owari-Tokugawa family, the head of the Gosanke, has preserved and displayed numerous treasures at the Tokugawa Art Museum. Among these, the "Hatsune no Chodo," considered Japan's most luxurious bridal trousseau and a national treasure, will be exhibited all at once for the first time in 10 years!

The "Hatsune no Chodo," recognized as the masterpiece of maki-e and an essential part of craft and cultural history, epitomizes the beauty of the Edo period's daimyo wedding furnishings. It was specially commissioned for Chiyohime, the eldest daughter of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun, when she married into the Owari Tokugawa family. This splendid golden maki-e masterpiece, consisting of 70 items that survived the threat of dispersal, collectively narrates the grandeur of the shogunate wedding to the present day. Its entire collection will be presented all at once after a decade.
