Hocho-shiki Knife Ceremony
庖丁式
Takabe Shrine is dedicated to the god of cooking, Iwakamutskari no Mikoto. It is revered by soy sauce and miso producers as a guardian deity. The ritual, performed in traditional attire such as eboshi and hitatare, involves cooking sea bream, carp, and bonitos without directly touching them, using only a knife and chopsticks. This ceremonial practice, adhering to ancient customs, showcases skilled knife work and represents a solemn rite that continues to pass on the traditions of Japanese cuisine.
