Owada Hikawa Shrine Summer Festival
大和田氷川神社夏祭り
The "Naked Mikoshi" exhibited during the summer festival held on Friday and Saturday at the end of July every year at the Owada Hikawa Shrine is said to have been started by the local people about 180 years ago to pray for a bountiful harvest and good health. The bearers wear white tabi, fundoshi, and happi coats while carrying the heavy mikoshi, said to weigh a thousand kan, parading along the Kawagoe Highway. Over time, the bearers began removing their happi coats, wearing only fundoshi to carry the mikoshi, hence the name "Naked Mikoshi." They lift the mikoshi high above their heads, lower it close to the ground, spin it around quickly and shake it violently from side to side, which led to it also being called "Wild Mikoshi." The shout of "Yan yo! Yan yo!" is one of its notable features.
