The Natsukoshi Oharae ritual at Sumiyoshi Shrine, located in Naka Ward, Hiroshima City. Known as one of Hiroshima’s three major festivals, it attracts around 20,000 visitors over two days. Highlights include passing through a giant 3-meter diameter ring made of cogon grass and the “ningyo-nagashi” ritual, where paper dolls carried on lanterns—representing oneself—are set afloat on the Honkawa River. At Sumiyoshi Shrine, rare water-soluble dolls are used, showing consideration for the environment. The festival also features a limited-edition goshuin (shrine seal) available only during the two days, which is extremely popular every year. In addition, there are plenty of fireworks, food stalls, and more to enjoy.
