Hittaka

ひったか
A traditional event related to the Genpei War, where 300-400 lanterns are lined up between Mount Gyoja in the east and Mount Myoken in the west. Lantern patterns depicting the social conditions of the year are created and skills are competed. The event takes place during the evening to night on the Saturday around the 5th day of the fifth month on the lunar calendar. It is said to be modeled after the story where the Heike forces lit large bonfires in the nearby mountains to create the illusion of a large army, causing the advancing Genji forces to retreat. "Raising a tall fire" is said to be the origin of the event's name.
