It is said that in the past, when epidemics spread, people prayed to the majestic Nioh deity to not contract the disease and passed under its arched legs. Particularly in the Edo period, smallpox spread widely, and it was a disease especially life-threatening to children. The Nioh deity was reputed in nearby regions as a protector against smallpox, attracting many visits from feudal lords and samurai from Edo. Thus, the practice grew popular, as people would pass under the deity's legs, hang ema plaques, and pray.
