A traditional event in Kume Island held annually on the 26th day of the 6th month of the lunar calendar. Not only do strong participants from within the island gather, but also from outside the island to compete in Okinawan sumo wrestling. Kume Island is famous for its Okinawan sumo, hosting as many as five tournaments a year. Unlike Japanese sumo, Okinawan sumo starts with both contestants already grappling each other, and the winner is the one who throws his opponent to the ground and makes his back touch the floor. The powerful and intense matches between men are truly a sight to behold. Registration for participation is accepted on the day of the event, so anyone can join in on the spot.
