Renkōji, one of the temples in the Yamashita temple group, was founded by Nichiren in the first year of Tenpō. The Star Festival is a winter ascetic practice in the Nichiren sect where monks, in loincloths, pour cold water over their heads to pray for health and a bountiful harvest. Believers use the remaining water to rinse their mouths, wishing for family safety.
