Kaneshiro Lion Dance
兼城獅子舞
A traditional event held annually on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. It is said to have begun about 200 years ago to drive away disasters and epidemics from the village and to pray for a bountiful harvest. Kaneshiro Lion Dance is performed to the rhythm of music, with gongs and drums resounding, first with a graceful dance by a beautiful woman. Two people called 'Hachiburō', attracted by the woman's dance, appear, lure the lion from the cave, and dance together. The lion and Hachiburō dance to the music, sometimes fiercely, sometimes gently.
