【April】Daishoin Fire-walking Ceremony
【4月】大聖院 火渡り式
The fire-walking ceremony at Miyajima is an annual event held by Daishoin, Omuro School of Shingon Buddhism.
Formally known as the 'Sanki Daikongen Spring Grand Festival' on April 15th and 'Autumn Grand Festival' on November 15th, it is held twice a year.
It is also referred to as 'Hiwatari Shinji.'
When the sacred fire, transferred from the 'unquenchable sacred flame' burning for about 1200 years, is ignited, the green leaves of hinoki become pillars of fire.
Thereafter, the great masters, monks, yamabushi, believers, and worshippers, each chanting their own wishes for fulfillment, walk barefoot through the fire.
