Tado Festival (Sagariuma Shinji)
多度まつり(上げ馬神事)
Tado Taisha Annual Festival is particularly famous for the "Sagariuma Shinji" ritual, which predicts the year's good or bad harvest. Six young jockeys chosen by divine lottery from among the parishioners train for a month for purification, then, in jinbaori and hakama, ride horses up a steep incline over 2 meters high. Falling from the horse is considered a bad omen, so it is customary for the entire town to help push the horse's "rump." The festival on the 4th includes a traditional Sagariuma Shinji, and the main event on the 5th features not only the horse riding with floral hats and warrior costumes but also a portable shrine procession and horseback archery, attracting people from nearby areas.
