UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Listed: Noto 'Seihaku Festival' Resumes!

ユネスコ無形文化遺産登録 能登「青柏祭」再開!

Designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, the "Seihakusai Hikiyama Event" is one of the grandest festivals in Noto. This spring, after a two-year hiatus, it is being held again, attracting attention not only from local residents but also from many tourists.

In May, as new leaves bud, the Seihakusai festival takes center stage at the Ojinushi Shrine (Sanno Shrine). The main attraction is the enormous Hikiyama, known as "Deka Yama," approximately 12 meters high and weighing about 20 tons, boasting an overwhelming presence. The spectacular "Tsuji Mawashi," a bold maneuver where the wheels, with a diameter of 2 meters, creak as they turn corners, and the "Tekoshu," skillfully adjusting the direction of the giant cart, are particularly noteworthy. Furthermore, the vibrant singing of the "Kiyarishu," combined with the energetic chants "Wasshoi" and "Enyaa" from the pullers, intensifies the festival's lively atmosphere.

From May 3rd to 5th, the center of Nanao City is enveloped in festive fervor. On the 4th, the Deka Yama from Kajimachi, Fuchumachi, and Uomachi convene at the Ojinushi Shrine, and on the 5th, they all gather near the Noto Food Festival Market and Sentai Bridge, offering numerous attractions. Additionally, on the night of the 2nd, the traditional event called "Ningyomi" is held, where dolls displayed on the Hikiyama are showcased in the houses of each mountain town.

As a symbol of revival, this event aims to bring back vitality to the land of Noto, and tourists are welcome to participate as pullers in the "Deka Yama." With tourist spots around Nanao City, such as the Noto Food Festival Market and Notojima Aquarium, reopening, we encourage you to attend the festival during Golden Week.
