Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival
高岡御車山祭
The Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival is said to have originated from the imperial vehicle used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to receive Emperor Goyōzei at Jurakudai. It was given to the townspeople by Maeda Toshinaga when he built Takaoka Castle.
Supported by the spirit and wealth of the townspeople of Takaoka, it is a festival of high status with decorations featuring Takaoka's excellent craftsmanship in metalwork, lacquer, and textiles applied to the wheels, railings, and crosspieces of the floats, making it one of Japan's most ornate. It was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.
Starting early in the morning, the seven beautifully decorated mikurumayama in each urban area undergo purification ceremonies (shubatsu) and parade through the town before assembling together. The sight of these elegantly decorated floats, supported by the spirit and wealth of the townspeople, boasting High Takaoka craftsmanship in metalwork, lacquer, and textiles, is truly stunning.
