Blue Demon Festival (Ishiyama-dera)

青鬼まつり(石山寺)
A festival commemorating the vow to repel demons and invite fortune by Rōchō Risshi, a renowned monk of Ishiyama-dera. Rōchō Risshi was one of those dedicated to collecting, preserving, and maintaining the scriptures and teachings conserved at Ishiyama-dera. After his death, he vowed to protect these sacred teachings in the form of an oni (demon) and to repel demons and invite fortune. On the day of the festival, a 5-meter-tall blue demon statue made of cedar leaves is erected facing the East Gate.
