Chiryu Festival (Main Festival)
知立まつり(本祭り)
The "Chiryu Festival," a ritual of Chiryu Shrine, alternates between the main festival and the interval festival every year. The festival's history is ancient, with the dedication of floats said to have begun in the Edo period (1653 "Nakamachi Rituals Record").
During the main festival, five floats, each 7 meters tall and weighing 5 tons, come forth from five towns. Accompanied by music known as "Shinbu," they proceed under the eaves of houses in a magnificent display. The "Dashi Bunraku" and "Karakuri" (a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage), performed on the floats during the main festival, are traditional local arts handed down since the Edo period. Additionally, the interval festival features the dedication of Hanaguruma (small floats).
※The next "main festival" will be held in 2026. Details such as the procession route of the floats will be announced on the Chiryu City's homepage.
