In the 29th year of the Meiji era, a ceramics exhibition was held at Kaeunji Temple in the town. Entering the Taisho period, the large clearance sale held in conjunction with this exhibition became the beginning of the pottery market. About 500 pottery shops line the approximately 3 km distance between Kami-Arita Station and Arita Station, bustling with more than a million visitors from all over the country.
