Kazusa Twelve Shrines Festival

上総十二社祭り

This Shinto ritual is said to have started around the year 807, approximately 1200 years ago. It is a grand ceremony where the deity Tamayori-hime and her family of gods reunite once a year at the significant Tsurigasaki coast. Led by a sacred horse, over a thousand men carry the sacred palanquins of the related deities, each bearing a palanquin, sprinting along Kujukuri beach and gathering at Tsurigasaki coast. This impressive spectacle has been designated as an intangible folk cultural asset of Chiba Prefecture. The annual festival is held on September 13th each year.<\/p>
