Akita Komagatake, boasting the highest elevation (1,637 meters) within Akita Prefecture, is a collective name for Dandake, Otake, Medake, and others, alongside Mount Nyuto, forming famous mountains at the southern end of Towada-Hachimantai National Park. Known as a treasure trove of several hundred species of alpine plants, the greatest in North Japan, the mountain opening ceremony is held annually on June 1 to pray for the safety of climbers. A sacred ceremony is held at the eighth station, followed by a commemorative climb to the summit and an exchange of ice axes with climbers coming from Shizukuishi Town.
