Oden Festival
御田祭
The Onda Festival of Tashiro Shrine (founded in 1032) in Saigo, Misato Town, is a rice-planting festival in which the sacred spirit of the main deity, Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto, is welcomed from Uemaruya Shrine and conducted with a divine procession from the Upper Miyata field to the Middle Miyata field.
Traditionally, the festival has been led by hereditary families who serve as ritual officials (Sarutahiko, Miyodo, Unari, Noborimochi), with general worshippers joining in. Deities, people, and livestock—all become one in the event, performing the plowing and rice planting of the sacred field, while praying for the worshippers’ good health and an abundant harvest.
This festival also preserves the lyrics of saibara (ancient court songs), restored in 1988, and is considered a rare and valuable folk event in the surrounding area that recalls ancient rice-cultivation rituals.
Centered around this Onda Festival, rice cultivation rites following ancient traditions are maintained as important agricultural ceremonies, beginning with the spring Sekku Festival on the third day of the third month in the lunar calendar, in which peach blossoms and hishimochi are offered, and ending with a purification ritual at the end of the grand festival in late November (Gregorian calendar), when the first rice ears are offered to the kitchen god.
