Amakusa Hondo Haiya Festival

天草ほんどハイヤ祭り
Haya is written as "south wind" and pronounced as "haya." It is said that the south wind was once called "Hae no kaze" (the wind of Hae), which then changed over time to "haya," and Ushibuka is considered its place of origin. Regarding the Amakusa Hondo Haya Festival, it began in September 1966 as a commemorative event for the opening of the Amakusa Gokyo bridges, when the Haya parade dance was performed for the first time. The festival is held every year as a major event involving the participation of all citizens, aiming to promote local industry, develop tourism, and foster exchange and goodwill with the surrounding regions. It has become a symbolic event of summer. Watching groups of people dressed in matching yukatas parading along the streets to the lively rhythm of the Haya-bushi song is a sight worth seeing.
