This is the annual grand festival of Wakaichi Oji Shrine, which has a tradition of over 700 years. The event is bustling with rare children’s horseback archery (yabusame), the gathering and display of floats (yatai), and processions of young children. Among them, the yabusame is one of the three major yabusame festivals in Japan, along with Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in Kamakura and Kamo Shrine in Kyoto, and is unique in that it is the only event in the country where children serve as the archers.
