Hibuse Jizo Festival

火伏地蔵祭
In each town, offerings of "creations", the brave "naked mikoshi", and other events have been conducted for over 400 years as part of the local festival. This festival began in the year of the Boar, Eiroku 6, when Fujiwara no Hatta Echigo-shi (the founder of the current Hatta family) moved from Ryusenji in Mamihara to the current location of the Jizo-do. It is recorded as the beginning of the festival, and during Ansei 5, the Jizo-do at that time was destroyed by a great fire. Thereafter, fire prevention prayers have continued to suppress recurrent great fires, continuing through over 400 years of history up until today. Young participants carrying the Jizo mikoshi are splashed with water by residents from their homes.
