In Shonai Town, Yamagata Prefecture, known as a major production area of delicious rice, there exists legends such as the "Flying Dragon Legend" and "Dragon God Worship". The "Shonai Kiryu Festival" was started as a new festival with the concept of this dragon, praying for abundant grains and town development. The symbol of the festival, the two dragons Flying Dragon and Princess Dragon, are imbued with souls. The festival features rituals for awakening the dragons, performances of Amurame Flying Dragon Drums, and dragon carrying experiences by elementary, junior, and high school students. The finale includes a dragon dance with a 40-meter-long Flying Dragon and a 30-meter-long Princess Dragon.
