Suwa Shrine Dedication Fireworks Festival (Enshu Arai Tezutsu Fireworks)
諏訪神社奉納煙火祭礼(遠州新居手筒花火)
The Suwa Shrine Fireworks Festival is a comprehensive fireworks event where, in addition to handheld fireworks, various pyrotechnic displays such as trick fireworks, large mortar fireworks, net fireworks, combined fireworks, willow-style fireworks, and aerial fireworks (shakudama) are also showcased. The handheld fireworks of Shinui in Enshu are documented in literature as early as the Jokyo era of the Edo period. Even today, the tradition remains unchanged and is passed down by the townspeople. The Shinui handheld fireworks festival is a lively and uninhibited event with a touch of wildness. Drum performances, conch shells, flutes, and people dressed as tengu are also featured, making it a unique festival unlike any seen elsewhere. Held annually in late July.
