Tokugawa Art Museum & Hōsa Library 90th Anniversary Special Summer Exhibition: "Celebrated Swords Across the Ages"

徳川美術館・蓬左文庫開館90周年記念 夏季特別展「時をかける名刀」

The "Gosanke" were the three families of the Tokugawa shogunate who ruled Japan during the Edo period, making them indispensable to Japanese history and culture. The Tokugawa Art Museum houses and exhibits numerous treasures inherited by the leading Owari Tokugawa family, and will hold a special summer exhibition, "Celebrated Swords Across the Ages."

For the warrior class, master blades were the most prized possessions. Not only were they superb weapons, but they have also been owned by several rulers of the land, or given as gifts to mark joyful milestones in life; with each era, their brilliant histories have accumulated, further enhancing their value. In this way, for hundreds of years, many master blades have been passed down from hand to hand, preserved to this day alongside their splendid mountings befitting their status.

This exhibition centers around the swords and mountings in the Tokugawa Art Museum's collection, spotlighting the stories behind each artifact, and will display master blades associated with famous warlords, daimyo, and ornate mounts. Celebrating the 90th anniversary of the museum, this large-scale exhibition brings together National Treasures, Important Cultural Properties, and famous masterpieces. It introduces visitors to the profound world of swords and sword mountings, which continue to fascinate across ages, from both historical backgrounds and their innate beauty.

Furthermore, the exhibition includes a collaboration with "Touken Ranbu Online" and a wide array of museum goods.
