Uto Jizo Festival

うと地蔵まつり
Held every year on August 23rd and 24th, this is one of the three major summer festivals in Higo. It originated when the first feudal lord of Uto donated six Jizo statues to Ennoji Temple (Motomachi 6-chome, Uto City) to protect children from an epidemic that was spreading at the time. Along the route from Uto Station to the Motomachi shopping street, Jizo statues decorated and dedicated by children line the way, and in between them, huge handcrafted displays called “Tsukuri-mono” made from everyday goods by local residents are exhibited. During the festival, the lively voices of children saying "A~gete kudasai, osaisen~" (Please offer some coins~) and the sounds of festival music fill the air.
