It is said that this event began in the mid-Edo period as a way to memorialize those who died in a great famine, by setting out boats made of straw on the riverbank. On the 15th, about 500 dancers perform a citizens' Bon dance circling around a decorated boat, while on the 16th the boats are sent out, creating exciting boat clashes against a backdrop of vibrant fireworks. On August 15, the Citizens' Bon Dance and decorated boat viewing will be held in front of Yokote City Hall. On August 16, the decorated boat procession and sponsor fireworks will take place around Janosaki Bridge.
