Maebashi Tanabata Festival
前橋七夕まつり
Tanabata is a traditional Japanese custom. In Maebashi City, the entire city has been holding the Tanabata Festival since 1951 (Showa 26).
The Tanabata Festival is also an event where shopping districts aim to offer enjoyment to their customers once a year. Each shopping district comes up with creative decorations and bamboo ornaments. A distinctive feature of this festival in our city is the abundance of handmade works. Themes such as nostalgic stories from the past or current topics are featured, and many ingenious creations—even some with moving mechanisms powered by motors—are made to inspire dreams in children. This attracts a large number of visitors from inside and outside the prefecture.
The Tanabata Festival is held every year in early July. A Tanabata Decoration Contest is also held, along with fun events, making it one of the leading Tanabata festivals in Japan, bustling with tourists.
