Miyazu Lantern Floating and Fireworks Festival
宮津燈籠流し花火大会
It is one of Japan’s three major lantern floating festivals, which began as a Bon spirit boat ceremony during the time of Kyogoku Takahiro, the lord of the Miyazu Domain, and is a traditional event that has continued since the Edo period. It took its present form in 1924 (Taisho 13). The sight of the spirit boats and about 10,000 lanterns drifting across the sea is a mesmerizing and fantastical scene that captivates everyone.
Furthermore, the fireworks are renowned as the best in Tango. From 7:00 p.m., the sea is filled with spirit boats and around 10,000 trailing red and white lanterns, and the approximately 3,000 dazzling fireworks reflected in the clear sky and on the water’s surface enchant all who watch.
