The grand festival of Tenmangu Shrine, known as the deity of learning, is held on the 25th, the birthday of Lord Michizane. The "Chinowa Kuguri" (passing through the ring of cogon grass) is a summer purification ritual. During the peak of summer, by bundling cogon grass and rubbing it against one's body, it is believed to cleanse away sins and impurities—a purification ritual called "misogi." Passing through the cogon grass ring is said to bring the blessing of good health for a whole year.
