November 2022, it was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. In the 11th year of Tenmon (1524), it is said that Yoshimi Masayori, the castle lord at the time, began this graceful dance of two white herons nestled together or facing each other and spreading their wings, in order to ward off epidemics. Originally, it was a tradition passed down from the Gion Festival at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, traveling from Kyoto to Yamaguchi, and from Yamaguchi to Tsuwano. Although it was interrupted at one time, it was revived in the 20th year of Kan'ei (1642), and has been passed down to the present day.
