Murakami Grand Festival
村上大祭
From July 6th (Eve Festival) to July 7th (Main Festival), the Murakami Grand Festival takes place, where the center of the city is paraded with gorgeously decorated Shagiri festival floats—Murakami’s traditional craft—adorned with carvings, lacquer, and gold and silver ornaments.
This grand festival, counted as one of the three major festivals in the prefecture, is an "Otabi Shinji" where the sacred spirits are enshrined in three portable shrines and a long procession led by drums makes its way through each town.
In 2018, the "Float Procession of the Murakami Festival" was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. It is a festival of history and tradition, also counted as one of the three great Takamachi (festival market days) in Niigata.
