Hioi Shrine Gion Festival

檜尾神社祇園祭
At the opening of the Hio Shrine Gion Festival, the symbolic event of the festival, “Hana-abai” (Flower Grabbing), unfolds. The scene of brave participants vying for the sacred flowers is an important moment that allows you to feel the energy of history and the local area. Within the shrine grounds, there are food stalls and spaces where you can taste local specialty products, with traditional performing arts and taiko drum performances welcoming the visitors. There are also plenty of games and activity corners for children, making it enjoyable for families as well. At dusk, under the light of lanterns, the area is wrapped in a magical atmosphere. Festival-exclusive goshuin (temple stamps) and special charms are given to visitors as commemorative gifts. Unique local foods and handicrafts are also available, making souvenir shopping one of the highlights. Among all these, the most recommended way to enjoy the festival is to watch the “Hana-abai” event up close. The intensity and excitement experienced right in front of your eyes is something you can’t find elsewhere. Be sure to spend this special day at Hio Shrine and enjoy a truly unique experience.
