Drum Spinning

太鼓廻し
Held on the night of July 18 at the main hall of Myoo-in. Myoo-in is the training hall for the Tendai ascetic Kaihogyo practice on Mount Hiei, and this day corresponds to the third day of the Katsuragawa Sanro undertaken by the practitioners. The drum-spinning performance, representing the training of So-o Kasho (831–918), is the highlight of the event. Local youths take turns spinning a large drum, 1.2 m in diameter, in the outer sanctuary boards of the main hall with tremendous force. When the rotation stops, a practitioner stands on the drum and leaps forward vigorously.
