Beer Festival
麦酒祭
The Beer Festival is a traditional event held at the Soja Shrine in Koka City. On the night before the festival, local people cooperate to brew a full barrel of beer through the night, which is then offered to the gods the next day. It is a sacred time of prayer for a good harvest and for the strength to get through the hot summer.
At the Soja Shrine, the venue of the event, people gather around the freshly brewed beer, enveloped in a unique atmosphere. Participants can feel the warmth unique to the region, such as the interactions among attendees, the solemn air characteristic of the shrine, and the local cuisine being served.
The biggest highlight is the “freshly born beer” that can only be tasted at this festival. This specially made festival beer is not available on the market, so every visitor can enjoy this exclusive flavor.
A particularly recommended way to spend the festival is to visit the shrine early in the morning, and after paying your respects, experience up close the brewing process and the moment of the offering. Savoring the beer while feeling the history and tradition of the area makes it taste exceptional.
