Sugamo, loved by the common people of Edo as "Sugamo's Chrysanthemums" from the Edo period to the early Meiji era. The present-day Sugamo Jizo-dori used to be the Nakasendo highway, and many gardeners lived along this route, making it a home of horticulture as well. To pass on this culture and history to future generations, the Sugamo Nakasendo Chrysanthemum Festival has been held since Heisei 5 (1993). The biggest attraction is the "Chrysanthemum Shaping" at Shinsho-ji Temple, where the temple grounds are decorated with colorful handmade works created by local shopping streets. Exhibitions of fresh flowers and haiku, as well as food stalls, are also held, bringing to life the bustling atmosphere of the Edo period when the town flourished through horticulture.
