Musashino's History and Folklore: Artifacts Preserved by the "Musashino Folk Museum"

武蔵野の歴史と民俗~「武蔵野郷土館」がのこしたモノたち~

The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum opened on March 28, 1993 (Heisei 5) as a branch of the Edo-Tokyo Museum and is now in its 33rd year. During this time, it has continued its activities with the aim of passing on valuable cultural heritage to future generations.

Before the construction of our museum, this site housed the "Musashino Folk Museum," which focused on the history of Musashino from prehistoric and ancient times to the modern era. This Folk Museum concluded its activities in 1991 (Heisei 3), but many of its valuable materials, including reconstructed buildings, archaeological, folk, historical, art, and library materials, were inherited by our museum. We have been organizing, preserving, and continuously making these materials available to the public.

This exhibition showcases archaeological materials collected by the "Musashino Folk Museum," such as clay earrings (Late Jomon period, excavated from the Shimo-Fuda site, designated as a National Important Cultural Property), as well as folk and art materials related to livelihoods, daily life, faith, and entertainment. Additionally, we introduce the activities of the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, which continues to carefully preserve and carry on the items inherited from the "Musashino Folk Museum."
