Special Exhibition Celebrating the Nara National Museum’s 130th Anniversary "Oh! KOKUHŌ Resplendent Treasures of Devotion and Heritage"
奈良国立博物館開館130年記念特別展「超 国宝―祈りのかがやき―」
Since its opening on April 29, 1895 (then as the Imperial Nara Museum), the Nara National Museum will celebrate its 130th anniversary in 2025. To commemorate this milestone, the Nara National Museum is hosting its first large-scale National Treasure exhibition.
The exhibition is titled "Oh! KOKUHŌ Resplendent Treasures of Devotion and Heritage". The prayer-inspired figures related to deities and Buddhas encapsulate the deep feelings of those predecessors who created and have protected and passed them down through the ages. Among them, "KOKUHŌ(National Treasure)" is widely known as the national gem representing our history and culture.
The term "Oh! KOKUHŌ Resplendent Treasures" embodies not only the meaning of these exceptional treasures but also the heartfelt belief that the prayers and the culture of this nation passed down from our predecessors are invaluable treasures in themselves.
In this special exhibition, with a focus on national treasures deeply connected to Nara Museum and Nara's history, important works that could be considered future national treasures will be introduced, showcasing masterpieces that Japan proudly presents to the world. About 140 works of Buddhist and Shinto art, including approximately 110 national treasures and 20 important cultural properties, will be displayed. Beyond 130 years of history, transcending the thoughts of the predecessors who created national treasures, Nara Museum is stepping forward to carry the torch of culture into the next era.
