奈良大文字送り火
It is a fire festival to console the spirits of the war dead and pray for world peace. The character "大" (dai) symbolizes the universe, and represents a purified heart offering consolation to spirits and the burning away of worldly desires hidden within the human body. The memorial service begins at Tobihino at 18:50, and the fires are lit on Mount Takamado at 20:00. The "大" character is among the largest in Japan.
