The Ultimate National Treasure Armor Exhibition: The World of Armor Beauty Showcasing the Essence of Japanese Craftsmanship

究極の国宝 大鎧展 ー日本の工芸技術の粋を集めた甲冑の美の世界ー

We will hold a special exhibition titled "The Ultimate National Treasure Armor Exhibition: The World of Armor Beauty Showcasing the Essence of Japanese Craftsmanship" at Kasuga Taisha, the head shrine of about 3,000 Kasuga shrines across the country, and a World Heritage Site.

This exhibition will, for the first time ever, display in parallel the two pieces hailed as the "twin peaks of extant armors" - the national treasure of Kasuga Taisha, the "Aka-ito Odoshi Oyoroi (Bamboo Tiger Sparrow Ornament)", and the national treasure of Kushi Hachiman-gu in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, the "Aka-ito Odoshi Yoroi (Chrysanthemum Ichimonji Helmet)". Additionally, this unprecedented large-scale exhibition will bring together half of the armor that has been designated as national treasures.

Japanese armor includes styles such as oyoroi, domaru, haramaki, and tosei gusoku, which are collections of craftworks that span various fields including metalwork, lacquer, and dyeing and weaving. It can be perceived as comprehensive art demonstrating the high level of Japanese craftsmanship and aesthetic sense.

The exhibition will illustrate the creation of oyoroi adorned with decorative metal items, the relationship between Kasuga Taisha and the armorsmiths of Nara, and the production of replicas of the Kasuga Taisha's oyoroi from the mid-Edo period to the early Showa era. Through these, you will learn about the allure of oyoroi, which can be considered the quintessence of Japanese comprehensive art.
