Bonten Festival
梵天祭
The Bonten Festival, influenced by the Shingon sect of Buddhism originating from India, has developed in Japan as a festival to pray for a rich harvest. The central scene of the festival is the dedication of a Bonten made from Moso bamboo to the shrine, reflecting an intent to ward off demons as well. The bold and powerful rituals are a feature of this event.
The festival is held in spring, with four regions — Wada, Nitta, Shuku, and Nishi — each dedicating their own Bonten to the Kamo Shrine. This lively procession and solemn dedication are highlights of the event.
Additionally, the festival offers a rare opportunity to experience the special culture of the region. Particularly, symbolic festival implements made from Moso bamboo are displayed, adding uniqueness to the festival.
Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the design of the Bonten in each region while experiencing the breathtaking dedication. This is a valuable event where regional tradition and modernity merge, so be sure to attend.
