Design Museum Japan Exhibition 2025: Collecting and Connecting Japanese Design
DESIGN MUSEUM JAPAN 展 2025~集めてつなごう 日本のデザイン~
Embark on a journey to discover the hidden, beautifully profound 'design treasures' scattered across Japan. This exhibition will unravel the mysteries of Japanese design, deeply embedded in daily life, along with captivating stories.
For over 10,000 years since the Jomon period, Japan has nurtured a unique living culture. Here, there exist 'designs' with rich narratives yet to be discovered by the world. Together with leading creators, NHK has conducted research into various regional living cultures.
The design process of product designer Sori Yanagi, the streets where shipbuilders in Sado, Niigata lived, the cutting-edge sportswear of Toyama, the allure of Nishimonai Bon dance costumes in Akita, the techniques of 'Anoshu' stone masons in Shiga, and the ambiance created by tiles in Shimane. Some might wonder, "Is this also considered design?" Indeed, all these are elements found in everyday Japanese life. However, for creators, these are sources of inspiration and the driving force for crafting the next exciting masterpiece, truly deserving the name 'design treasures.' These 'design treasures' will be presented along with their stories in programs and exhibitions.
If the 'design treasures' throughout Japan are connected, the entire country could be seen as a large 'design museum.' It is hoped to make many people across Japan realize that 'design' indeed surrounds us, enriching and invigorating our daily life.
Let's embark on a 'design treasure hunt journey' with creators. This exhibition will center around 8 'design treasures' researched in the fiscal year 2024.
