Chagu Chagu Umakko
チャグチャグ馬コ
This is a ceremony to honor farm horses and pray for a disease-free life. Nearly 80 decorated horses, dressed in colorful outfits of gold, silver, red, and purple, make a 14 km journey from Onikoshi Sozen Shrine in Takizawa City to Hachimangu Shrine in Morioka City, taking about 4 hours. The bells jingle 'chagu-chagu' during the procession (departing Onikoshi Sozen Shrine at 9:30 AM). In 1978, it was selected by the government as an intangible folk cultural property that should be recorded, and in 1996, the sound of the bells was chosen by the Ministry of the Environment as one of the '100 soundscapes of Japan to be preserved'.
