This is a traditional event held every year on the 25th day of the 6th month of the lunar calendar in Kumejima Town, Okinawa Prefecture, where Okinawa wrestling is so popular that as many as five tournaments are held throughout the island each year. The strongest people from all over the island gather in the town to participate. The contestants use unique techniques against each other in heated matches, and the audience gets very excited watching them. Okinawa wrestling is different from Japanese sumo in that the match starts with the competitors already holding each other, and the winner is decided by throwing the opponent down so their back touches the ground. Since participants can sign up on the day of the event, tourists and others can also join in, so be sure to give it a try!
