Every year on the 15th of May in the lunar calendar, an event is held in front of the Bodhisattva Hall (ブサードー) in Maja. The Maja Sumo Tournament is the first sumo event held on the island, maintaining the form of a dedicatory sumo match to pray for a bountiful harvest. It starts with the local Misaki Elementary School section, followed by divisions for island elementary, junior high, and high school students, and a general division, which includes not only island participants but also top wrestlers from various parts of the prefecture. On-the-day participation is possible for the general division. Why not give it a try?
