Amidaji, a branch temple of Todai-ji, is said to have been founded by Shunjobo Chogen in 1187 (Bunji 3) to pray for the peace of the Emperor Go-Shirakawa. Known as the "Hydrangea Temple," Amidaji is home to 80 varieties and 4,000 bushes of hydrangeas that beautifully decorate the temple grounds.
