Over 400 years ago in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, Hayaki became a central hub for transportation where fishermen and farmers brought together mountain and sea delicacies to barter, forming a "market." During its peak from the late Edo period to the mid-Meiji era, as many as 600 ships gathered, and it was said that the tea prices of Kyushu were determined at Hayaki. This rich history of over 400 years continues to thrive as the Hayaki Tea Market remains vibrant today.
